Finally! Petroglyph photos! Yay!
Last week, during our trip to the Dugout, we took a sidetrip… and visited these petroglyphs. Neither I nor Vernon knew they existed until a week or two before our visit. While helping our neighbors, Johnny and the neighbor just happened to mention the carvings. Vernon’s ears perked up, taking note of the location and incorporated this into our outing.
All I know is… it took me 29.5 years to find out about these… but come summer, I’m going back for a full day picnic and exploration!
These are more historical than others I’ve seen… this one in particular.
Well, at least Tony didn’t do it over the top of some of the original petroglyphs!
Petroglyphs means Rock Carving. Remember it with Petroleum: Rock Oil. The pictures are carved INTO the rock as opposed to pictographs which are Painted Writings.
Typical of petroglyphs and pictographs are shield figures. Imagine holding a large round shield in front of you… what else do you see? A head, legs, and sometimes hands…
This warrior holds his long bow…
The best ornate figure was this one…
This guy would have *really* looked cool if someone of below average intelligence hadn’t shot it repeatedly. So… your thoughts… is his hair standing on end, or are those multiple feathers in his headdress?
Then there are critters…
My best guess… a bear.
But my mostest favorites…
the horses.
Look at this guy’s feather headdress… even his pony has a feather in his forelock.
This warrior has feathers on his shield as well…
Ahhhhh…
But this one…
With his “spirit” coming out of his snorting nose…
and his speed creating “wind” behind him…
This ‘un’s my favorite…
A North American Bucephalus…

Wow, excellent photos of some VERY historical petroglyphs.
