One job most people don’t think of when they consider raising livestock…
is the supplementation of livestock diets with minerals and salt…
Depending on your feed and your minerals in your land and minerals in your water…
you may have to give them some extra goodies…
In the early summer we give minerals high in magnesium to help combat the poison of the larkspur…
Now you can *buy* mineral feeders…
But 95% of the guys around here have some form of these feeders…
Old tires nailed to a frame of boards…
Usually with some old rags or plastic crammed into any holes to plug them up!
As the rain covers the hills…
Vernon rips open the sack of minerals…
to add to the salt in the feeder…
Yes, the salt is pinkish…
It is sea salt…
50 pounds per bag…
natural…
and pollution-free…
Repackage this in small recycled bags and sell it for $6 a pound to your friends…
Just your entrepreneurial tip of the day…
These minerals I nicknamed “Cubic Zirconia”…
Because Cu Zn transferred to my brain as Cubic Zirconia first…
Then Copper and Zinc.
Sometimes I’m a little slow…
errrr…
I just think outside of that little cardboard box!
Just for good measure…
Mix the two…
So they don’t ignore one over the other…
The way I treat broccoli and ranch dressing…
kinda…
sorta…
Oh look!
Anyone (besides me) see a red balloon????
Now…
Add a happy cow…
Add multiple cows…
because they literally come running when they see you stop at the feeders…
They know what’s coming!
You’d think this was ice cream or something!
Ben and Jerry’s flavor of the week…
“Happy Cows on Cu, Zn, and NaCl!”
Beware:
Cow noses ahead!
“PLLLLLFFFTT”
That calf would get a reprimand from my mother…
“Keep that tongue in your mouth!”
But my favorite is this one…
Of course…
I mean, really…
How handy is this move??
But…
never fear…
the best shot of the day falls to Dally…
Who I’d label the *salty dog*…
If she wasn’t laying on the mineral sacks…
