I managed to roll out of bed…
have breakfast…
drink coffee…
and get a few things cleaned up and put away…
before our vet called and said he’d drop in and preg test those “lost” cows and test one bull…
Well…
that meant we had to get the bull IN the corral instead of the bull pasture…
which meant we had to get the horses in to ride to get the bull in…
which meant I had to jump on the four wheeler and find the horses!
So my productive morning was put on hold and I went searching for the horses.
Now…
most people would think we’d have horses in the corral constantly…
but we don’t.
We turn them out around our houses and the surrounding hillsides to graze and drink at will.
Once you start them the right direction…
by driving the four wheeler behind them…
they usually head for the corral on their own.
Quickly saddled and a mile away from the house…
we were riding through what has long been called The Double Crossing…
due to the two creek crossings during the stagecoach era…
Panama refused to cross the boggy little stream…
No, Daniel, I didn’t whip and spur…
but I did try…
and Vernon even tried to lead him across…
It was a no go…
I ended up going to the creek and crossing there where the stream was a foot wide.
Turkey.
In the bull pasture runs Crooked Creek.
Four foot wide and a steep bank on the other side…
we were all alone for this one!
I let him drink and relax and drink…
then encouraged him a bit…
With a powerful lunge across and up…
Panama about unseated me…
my right leg flew up…
my right hand whacked the horn…
if he’d jumped one more time I would have been lost!
It wasn’t pretty.
He’s used to crossing the big creek now…
but…
these little bitty things just still freak him out…
We managed to make it home with our bulls and crippled cow…
and my seat stayed in the saddle!
The Good Doctor showed up after lunch…
and quickly preg tested five head who had avoided the big day for whatever reason…
He also tested one bull who’d had problems last spring.
I only got one quick photo of that…
Do you want to see?
Really?
If not…
skip this part!
I’ll insert the picture to give you time to think about it…
To test a bull to see if his equipment is working and to see if his semen is any good…
The vet inserts a rather large probe in the bull’s rectum…
yeah…
Quick…
Go get your husband and read this to him…
The probe is connected to a electrical device.
No kidding.
The Good Doctor gives him a mild zap…
which, reflexively…
should make the bull extend his penis and ejaculate.
Yah.
Cool, huh?
And you thought preg testing was yucky!
The vet will then quickly stick a glass slide down there and cover it with semen…
take it to his portable microscope…
and see how many little swimmers there are!
Unfortunately…
despite the good bedside manner of the Good Doctor…
our bull couldn’t even extend himself.
Not good.
So much for *that* bull…
<Coming soon to a Wendy’s near you…>
(I would have said McDonald’s – but they buy most of their beef from overseas)
That was my day…
in a nutshell…
haha…
what did you do???
