Back to It

Posted on August 6, 2021August 6, 2021

We’ve had a short break from moving cattle… filling our time with haying (cutting, baling, and stacking) and irrigating (without which there’d be nothing to bale) and working on water projects. Today, though, we were on horseback once again.

This is rocky, rocky country. Up in the corner of the pasture is what we call the Sheepherder’s Monument. Visible for miles around, various monuments or cairns run along the edge of the mountain.

Yes, it is taller than me on Panama. While Indians made similar cairns, most of them are round but this one has well defined corners. Were they trail signs or markers? Were the sheepherders bored with their life and created them as they slowly moved through their days?
I suppose we will never know for sure….
