Even though it needs many coats of polyurethane, I declare the table finished! Well, and then Megan has to finish the base… but my artwork and the painting/staining is complete.
I painted some shading in this morning and left that to dry.
With heaters going, the studio was plenty warm for paint to dry. A walk with Bravo and lunch and, although quite anxious, I stirred the grey stain and talked myself into taking the plunge. I would either ruin it or love it and there was only one way to know the difference.
I don’t know what happened. I had planned to go AROUND the sunflowers with the stain, but somehow I just started putting it on and there I was… covering the entire table with the stain. I just don’t know where my brain was and the tabletop was now decorated with muddy colored sunflowers. I admit, I had a moment or two of “what the hell have I done?”
I hustled to my house and grabbed some mineral spirits and a rag. I had to try something!
Notice the bottom part the the photo. The sunflowers are enveloped in fog, washed out and dismal. On the upper part of the photo, you can see where I’ve scrubbed off some of the stain, brightening and returning the sun to the flowers! Whew. Whew. Whew.
Trauma was avoided!
I rather think the light stain on the flowers is appealing now that they’re brighter.
Oh, sure, there’s still work to do, but it’s just straightforward, not artsy… and a weight is gone! I didn’t ruin it! Next time I take a picture of it, maybe it will be in Megan’s house! I declare my part complete!Find me here!
