Poor Babies

Posted on March 19, 2016

My chicks arrived this morning.  At 6:50 am, my local post office called, and I hurried down to Ten Sleep.  Opening the box, I saw 26 little bodies.  I saw one barely breathing, so I pulled her out and dropped some sugar water down her beak. The chicks had been shipped on Tuesday and went…

Posted on March 14, 2016March 13, 2016

I made a video, but it failed to upload, and although I told it to re-upload, it sure is taking its sweet time. I worked at prepping for my baby chicks… Which is a mishmash of how about this? maybe that? here? there? Wha??????? I moved my chicken tractor out, planning to put it by…

Soldier On

Posted on February 4, 2016February 3, 2016

Day Three of my “Let’s Create” Challenge: Vernon is in bed. I gather my watercolor palette, paper, brushes, and a small container of water.  Sitting on my couch… I choose a photo to paint from my ipad collection.  Today, it’s going to be my rooster, Spot.  He’s actually nice, and photogenic! I’m trying to soften…

Spot: Attitude Chick

Posted on October 28, 2015October 27, 2015

Today’s chore?  Cleaning the chicken coop! Yippee! Oh, it’s definitely not bad with just 6 hens and a rooster… they spend so much time outside, I don’t have to do this very often.  Plus Wyoming is SO dry, most chicken poop dehydrates pretty fast!  Dry = no smell, so yay! First, the girls had to…

Plenty to Do

Posted on July 6, 2015

It seems like all I have worked on this past month was “Jen”, the T.rex skull, or the Grasslands Exhibit.  On occasion, I did help out a bit with ranch work. There was the morning spent bleeding our heifers. This is a pregnancy test for the heifers to see if the AI process took.  That…

Preparation

Posted on May 15, 2015

Our first branding is scheduled for tomorrow.  A good sized rainstorm hit this evening, and there’s a good chance for more tomorrow.  We’re unsure if branding will happen or not, wet weather and branding do not mix! However, chili is cooked, cookies made, relish tray washed and sliced, house was cleaned (and re-dirtied), new bed…

Enjoying Ourselves

Posted on May 9, 2015

Rain. We’re up to 1.34″ so far, with more predicted!  There’s also a huge snowstorm going to hit eastern Wyoming, although it is supposed to miss us.  Hopefully, everyone over there has their livestock in a sheltered spot and plastic over their tomatoes if they’ve planted them already. My chicks were due today… but since…

Goin’ Broody

Posted on May 3, 2015

Well, I’m pretty sure Dally is going to have pups… She’s acting so Very Pregnant… But that’s still three weeks away or so… and there’s other babies coming, hopefully, before that! Meet my two broody hens. These are two from my last year’s hatchery bought chicks.  I only have six left… Three are Buff Rocks…

Hold Them

Posted on June 26, 2014

I spent most of this hot and muggy day in the chicken coop.  I remember, when I temporarily turned it into the Puppy Coop, that I stated “I will always have more puppies than chickens!”  Yeah, well… I repaired the front wired door, replacing chicken wire with some heavier duty rabbit wire… That took SOOOO…

Bird Day

Posted on June 17, 2014

The goal today was to get my “new” chicks relocated to the chicken coop. First, put the Baby Bull in the alley, so he doesn’t help.  Twice he’s been in the milking room where I’ve been keeping my new chicks.  And, yes, he’s trashed it!  Not a chance this time, buddy! Then, I waited until…

Carol, Wyoming rancher

Since 2008, I’ve kept this photographic journal of life on our working Wyoming ranch.  I share ranch work, my family, crafts and DIY, my English Shepherds, Bravo and Indy, and a love for this land.  Enjoy this red dirt country!
