Cold Frame

Posted on March 10, 2020March 10, 2020

Oh, spring fever has me in its grip! Unfortunately, next week is supposed to be cold and snowy… I couldn’t help it, I had Brandon help me get my cold frame out of the garage. I’m probably a month early on this, but hey, you might as well see what happens! I’ve set it out…

What a Day

Posted on May 12, 2019May 12, 2019

A very happy Mother’s Day to all my readers, those with their own kids, those that have stepped up to mother those kids that need it, and those who just simply love children for who they may become. I spent the day working outside… Fighting with my riding lawnmower… and losing… Switching to my little…

Spring Work

Posted on May 5, 2019May 5, 2019

The guys are busy plowing, discing, and fertilizing the fields… it’s magical how we instantaneously turn into farmers… Well, I have my farming to do as well! The garden is now clean and tilled… next I’ll see what compost/straw/manure I can find to add to it. I’ve debated about moving my tomato watering buckets… still…

Hugelkultur Video

Posted on May 5, 2018

2013.  Seriously.  It was 2013 when I found out about hugelkultur and decided I’d give it a shot!  Everyone wanted me to test drive it, and avoid the work themselves… well, five years later, I think it’s a success… and now I’m five years ahead of “everybody”!  Posting on my iPad doesn’t let me link…

That Works

Posted on June 10, 2017June 9, 2017

I’ve noticed bright, colorful flower pots for sale… a rainbow of colors.  I’ve been tempted… might as well have some color in your flowerbeds before the flowers actually BLOOM. But you know me, I didn’t want to spend the $$$ for a colored plastic pot. I have all sorts of boring, black, white, and clay…

Half a Mile to Go

Posted on May 7, 2016May 6, 2016

I alternate between cleaning my house and outdoor chores… too often I ignore my house in favor of “playing”, so it’s about time I do more than a swipe and a swish to clean things up!  It *is* SPRING… While cleaning my light fixtures of bugs is rewarding… it’s not very photogenic… it isn’t very…

Sounds Like Work

Posted on May 4, 2016May 3, 2016

If you see me tomorrow, and I’m walking a bit slow… it’s because I rototilled on my garden for a bit… then I rode my bike clear to the mailbox at the other place (roundtrip of six miles)… then I came home and mowed my lawn with my little mower.  It’s like pushing a mower…

Sweet

Posted on October 3, 2015October 2, 2015

It’s starting to cool off here… acting like October! I put away two of my large flower pots for the winter… I had sweet potato vine growing in them for the summer… and I thought…. well, might as well dig down and see if they did anything.  Yup.  Enough for a couple of servings.  Who…

Deadline

Posted on May 1, 2015

Nothing like a deadline to kick me into gear!  I’ll be heading back to help Victoria some more with baby Matthew, so I had to get stuff done around here. I did manage to do a fair amount, though, as usual… never as much as I thought I could do!  My yard is raked again…

A Shot at Straw Bale Gardening

Posted on April 12, 2015

We had a bit of rain and snow this morning… great for moisture, which we really need!  I worked outside and in today… Here’s my straw bales this morning… I have them in an “E” shape, with the brace left over from last year’s pole beans as a support along the back.  The smaller poles…

Garden Plans

Posted on April 11, 2015

With the weather being so nice (barring the wind), my garden is ahead of schedule.  It’s rototilled and fertilized and ready to go.  There’s a few things I’m doing different, though. First of all, I didn’t “clean” it like usual.  I left everything but tomatoes and squash vines in the garden over the winter, letting…
