Not Far Away

Posted on November 15, 2009January 7, 2015

I had a flying trip to Casper again today…

I’ll reveal the reason later this week…
it continues Dana’s story…
unfortunately…
and fortunately…
but I don’t have the energy to tell the story tonight.
Since I had taken surplus photos last weekend…
I figured I could share those…
Wyoming scenery never seems to disappoint!
Casper, traveling the back roads, is a 3 hour drive…
a 3 hour drive…
<key Gilligan’s Island music>
One and half is spent with heavy traffic on dirt roads…
Like here…

And here…

And here…
traff3
By traffic, of course, I’m referring to the large amount of antelope, rabbits, and sagebrush!
Honestly, I met two cars this morning…
I knew the one driver…
and I met one tonight…
in the dark…
I *could* have known them…
hard to tell in the blackness!
The other hour and a half is spent on the busy highway between Moneta and Casper.
traff4
Which I’m smart enough to NOT take pictures of…
too much traffic!
Do you think I’m crazy?
This photo looks north to Lysite, leaving the multiple cars behind me.
The Highway Department actually plants many signs…
“Buckle up – it’s the law”…
“PASS WITH CARE”…
“DRIVE SAFELY”…
“Turn on lights for safety!”
Because so many people get bored on the stretch of road around Moneta and fall asleep.
And kill themselves and others…
I don’t mind this *boring* road that much.
There’s oil field activity to watch…
<Gotta LOVE the oil drilling industry…>

Tons of antelope and cattle…
hawks and eagles…
and a real life Rest Stop.
(Don’t laugh… they are few and FAR between in Wyoming!)
The tiny towns are nestled about 30 miles apart from each other…
Waltman, Natrona, Powder River, and Lysite…
as seen below.

A few miles from Lysite is Lost Cabin…
I’d love to investigate the mansion and this building…
lostc
A great place for a boarding house and family style meals…
at least that’s what I’ve thought for the past 30 years…
as it continues to stand empty…
Once again…
NOTHING matches the red dirt that tells me home is not far away…

Carol, Wyoming rancher

Since 2008, I’ve kept this photographic journal of life on our working Wyoming ranch.  I share ranch work, my family, crafts and DIY, my English Shepherds, Bravo and Indy, and a love for this land.  Enjoy this red dirt country!
