A week ago, snow covered the ground. We still had two feet of snow on some undisturbed fields.
Then the chinooks rolled in, with some nights not sinking below freezing and poof! Snow has almost disappeared. Oh, there’s some on the north side of hills and in the shady spots that don’t see sunshine… but it’s been an amazing week.
The slick, gooey spring mud is drying as well… the melting run-off from the fields has dun r.u.n.n.o.f.t.
That doesn’t mean much more won’t be coming off the mountains, but for the first time since fall, I’m not walking on ice, snow, or mud to my chicken coop!
The cows are busy calving and every day, the new babies are written down, tags are made, and the next day, the guys will drive through the herds… and reach out and snag a little one.
A quick grab for the tackle box that holds the new ear tag, a “bander” for those bull calves soon to be steers, and a tool for the ear notch which is part of our brand marking.
In less than a minute, the calf will be up, wondering what happened. Vernon is fast… I don’t even bother getting off the four wheeler… You’d think he’d done this since… well, forever!
