Wild Mountain

Posted on July 8, 2025July 8, 2025

After drawing blood to test for pregnancy, it was time for the heifers to go be on the cool mountain. We take them to a leased pasture by semi. Well, at least partway. We unload them from the semis, and then it’s time to trail them across and down to their new pasture.

Vernon and I had his sxs full of salt and mineral, so as the cowboys worked, we zipped ahead, placing tubs and filling them with the salt and mineral.

As we went in a lower gate, I spied a bull elk running down the hill straight for us. The cowboys must have spooked him out of the trees and down he came!

Though he was breathing hard, he stopped and looked at us, definitely not panicked. He took off running again and I knew he was running toward the fence we had just come through. I waited…

Ha! I caught him just as he jumped. Elk are hard on fences but it looks like he cleared most of it. He then ran a bit, stopped and watched us again…

Can you see his velveted antlers above the sagebrush?
Well, that was exciting!

We continued…

This is a gorgeous pasture and I told Vernon any artist would have a difficult time choosing which view to paint or photograph first.

Job done, we posed for a cowboy portrait.

Looks like this elk was a good jumper and cleared the fence. Also he was alone — didn’t have to worry about anybody else. Congratulations on a great picture. Loved the portrait as well.

    Togetherness…goals achieved…beautiful country to savor…and a majestic
elk to top it off! Great day, I’d say.
