Into the Soil

Posted on February 8, 2026February 8, 2026

Vernon and I decided to explore for the Lord’s dugout and cabin. The story I posted here was a doozy and it made me wonder exactly where they lived. Locally, we call Lord’s Gulch as one that feeds into the Double Crossing, but it’s almost a mile from where I thought their cabin should be.

Our first historical remnants used to be a sawmill in the 1970’s.

There were various piles of lumber scattered across the hillside, but not much more of note.

I’m going out of order… but across the hillside was a small dugout, perhaps a cellar, and a large dugout, which fit the size description in the story, but it wasn’t in the place I would have thought it would be.

Above Crooked Creek is also the foundation of the Seventh Day Adventist Church.

The building that sat here is now their rec building for the Church in Ten Sleep.

The Greet School is looking so sad anymore…

If I remember correctly, Johnny’s dad built this little schoolhouse so Johnny could go to school close to home. It used to sit below our Big Red Rock but the creek washed and moved and the school was in danger, so they moved it to this spot. It’s not on our land anymore. The back began to bow out years ago and now it has a serious twist. A heavy, wet snowfall will put it down and another piece of history will sink back into the soil.

These were all great discoveries and all within such a small radius! But the best is yet to come…
