Up the Mountain

Posted on March 23, 2026March 23, 2026

Last year, Vernon and I would take our Sundays to see how far up the mountain we could go in our side by side. After doing maintenance on my side by side, lunch, and a hair cut for Vernon, up the mountain we went.
This is March. We shouldn’t be able to make it too far… but we did.

A few minutes later, elk saw us and took off over the hill. We kept going, past mud puddles and an occasional tiny snow drift.

The little creek that usually will be flowing over the road instead is at its late July level. More elk ran up from a canyon…

The road had washed and was rutted and muddy, but we kept going and going and going. Holy cow… we made it to our pasture and saw elk in the distance laying in the sun. They shouldn’t be up this high yet. Grass isn’t and shouldn’t be growing yet but in sheltered south facing areas, the grass is green.

We made it almost to our special place, having to walk the last bit due to the drifts in the trees.

Everything is in great shape… and my view is still the same.

but… no snow. We shouldn’t be here until almost May.

or the end of May.

While I’m thrilled I can make it up here… folks, this is scary… Wyoming relies on snow runoff for so much of its water… I’m just praying we get one of those old Easter storms of 14” of heavy, wet snow! Fingers crossed.
