Round and Round

Posted on April 28, 2019April 28, 2019

While today was cold and windy and it even tried to snow… yesterday was sweet! Vernon asked if I’d like to drag fields with the pickup… and so I did.

Settled with my audiobook, water bottle, and trusty sidekick… I set to work. Dragging fields is done with a simple metal toothed piece of equipment hitched to the pickup. No hydraulics are necessary, there’s no wheels, no lifting required, just think of it as a VERY HEAVY DUTY chainlink fence section with some extra pokey teeth attached! Did I take a picture? No. Otherwise I wouldn’t be struggling trying to describe the thing to you!

The reason we do it, is because all winter, we are feeding hay to our cows on these fields. Sure we move around some, but there’s leftover hay and manure now laying there, blocking the alfalfa and grass from growing.

We’re raking the fields… freeing up the packed areas so things can grow!

All that tan is dry grass, hay, and manure now raked up from the roots. The hay will quickly grow up through it now.

I don’t usually spend a lot of time doing this kind of work, so my trusty sidekick didn’t really know what to think of it… I thought she would go to the creek, sniff out a mole or mouse, and have a fun day. Instead she went back and forth, round and round and round all day. I finally took pity on her and put her in the pickup. She definitely got her steps in!

You all are so clever with your innovations you put together and use on the farm! I am always so impressed by that. Also, I can’t believe Lorelei is 5 already. She is a cutie too. You have such a wonderful family. Thanks for sharing with us.

Beautiful photo. Happy Birthday Lorelei. What a wonderful cake. My Grandson will also be 5 in a couple of weeks time. Not sure what his cake will be.
