New Ways

Posted on March 18, 2025March 18, 2025

It was time to start our “Sandhills Method” for this year. That basically means we’re moving cows!

Those that have calved are left behind with their babies. Those that haven’t calved will be moved to another place. This helps with disease spread (hopefully) and takes the pressure off of the pastures they’re in.

They were ready to go… and knew their way, so doing it on four wheelers and sxs was easy enough. We used to fight moving baby calves and it was always a mess doing it on horseback, but now, with no babies and worried moms… it’s actually not bad!

We blocked off the turns we wanted them to avoid, to keep them going on, and I dropped in at the back as they passed.

By golly, we did it. Oh, it wasn’t perfect… I think there was a cow or two that needed to go back and a few that hadn’t calved yet that were left behind, but we weren’t stressing about them too much. I always go back and reread my “Herding Cats” blog post, and I’m grateful for new ways of doing things!

Carol, Wyoming rancher

Since 2008, I’ve kept this photographic journal of life on our working Wyoming ranch.  I share ranch work, my family, crafts and DIY, my English Shepherds, Bravo and Indy, and a love for this land.  Enjoy this red dirt country!
