Another Burton Generation

Posted on October 18, 2025October 18, 2025

Brandon, accompanied by Lorelei, had just stopped by to turn off my water temporarily. Lorelei had mentioned she had wanted to go shooting her .22. She is in the middle of taking hunter safety with her 6th grade class and is enjoying it tremendously. While I was giving them some eggs, I received a text and phone call from Jaxon. He was requesting to try my “old” .243.

My first instinct was to say, “It isn’t OLD”, but since I’ve shot my .243 rifle since I was probably 13 very young years of age… it qualifies. Daniel had told Jaxon that he shot his first animals with my little gun, so Jaxon was ready to try it out. Tess has a .243 as well, but my shortbarreled model 600 is lighter and easier to handle.

I decided Lorelei and Jaxon and I could join forces. So we did.

After a short practice with .22’s, we moved onto reviewing safety guidelines… and my .243.

Lorelei took to it fast, but was quickly done with the kick and the noise.

Then Jaxon took his turn.

We had forgotten our ear protection… so not only did they have to wince at the gun’s loud report, they had to endure a few stories of my dad and how he taught me to shoot and to hunt.

Jaxon seems to have his dad’s natural ability. After a box of shells, though, we called it quits. My little “old” rifle seems to have done its job teaching another Burton generation (my maiden name).
