Nasty Stuff

Posted on September 8, 2026September 8, 2026

I was hanging out at Daniel’s by the corral… supposedly waiting on the electrician who was late. Bravo and Indy had jumped out to run around for a bit, but soon came back limping. Ugh. There’s goat heads down there, so I bent down, and sure enough, pulled goat heads out of their paws. Then I started to look around. They were everywhere!

Goat heads are a low growing nasty, rotten, why-do-they-exist weed. Their seed starts as a pea-like nodule that as it matures, pops open to reveal multiple spikes.

No matter which way they lay, at least one sharp spike is upwards ready to poke in paws, shoes, and tires. They’re easy enough to shovel up and in best practice, put into a garbage bag for disposal. So, as I waited on the electrician, I got to work.

In no time, I had a bag full. I concentrated on the weeds closest to where we drive, knowing the seeds would contaminate whatever field tires would drive into.

As I walked around, Bravo and Indy gave up… preferring to hang out and pant in the hot side by side rather than walk around this area.

It is nasty stuff and I put a dent in them today! And I was especially careful to remove my shoes when I got home before walking in the dirt. I pulled 18 from my shoes!
