Gatherin’ to Wean OOPE

Posted on September 27, 2009January 5, 2015

We gathered our mountain pasture today…

Tomorrow we wean our calves from their mommas…
The boys delayed their return to Laramie for a couple of hours so they could help…
Besides the *definite* chill in the air and the *wind*…
It was a great day up there!
I had on my winter Carhartt…
gloves…
chinks…
an ear band over my baseball cap…
and a red scarf around my neck!
It was just a tad brisk…
especially riding *into* the wind!
I had hoped to see some elk or at least hear some lone bull bugling for some cute young cows…
but I didn’t.
I *did* see three nice muley bucks…
In fact…
about 10 seconds before I took this picture…
they were right *there*!

You just get to see the cool dead tree…
Sorry…
just not fast enough!
I took Dally today.
It’s too big of a day for Lucas…
and Elsa got to go the other day…
Of course…
Boomer had to end up following me, too.
I often wish I could leave him at home…
but Vernon wants to take him…
but he ends up with me…
Interfering with me and Dally…
argh!

This is what Dally needs to work on…

That’s her on the left…
I successfully sent her up to that lone heifer on the left…
Dally brought her down the hill perfectly.
See the others to the right??
I couldn’t get Dally to go get them for *Nothing*!
She just stood in front of me and barked and barked.
The barking brought them off the hill…
and made me mad!
I *swear* I do the same thing…
use the same words…
and she acts so confused and goes to barking!
I need a dog trainer to ride along with me and see what I’m telling her…
‘Cause evidently I’m telling her confusing instructions!

The aspens are starting to turn their majestic golden colors…
but this was as close as I got today…
I was riding “high”…
uhm…
I was riding the “high road”!
gw5
As we brought the last bunch into the horse pasture…
Panama and I flushed a large covey of chukars…
Squint and you’ll see them flying above the cattle!
gw6
We had a sick calf to doctor…
Vernon ropes it…
Johnny and I run over to bust it…
<no picture>
Thankfully it just kind of tipped over…
<no picture>
because even though it was sick…
it was also huge.
Hopefully…
we caught it in time to cure it.
<no picture>
<sigh>

Here *is* a picture of Good Dog Dally staying in the pickup like I told her to…
uh…
Boomer…
not so much!
My Fave of the Day…
Ta-dah!
Panama tied at the corral with the Fossil Butte in the background!
