Sneaky

Posted on April 5, 2009March 16, 2015

Well, I had to do it… I snuck off of the ranch today to attend one more Spring Creek Raid meeting… this time held in what is now known as The Big Horn Stage Company.  This building is on the National Register of Historic Places and has been a hardware store, cafe, and general store….

Popularity

Posted on April 4, 2009April 25, 2014

When I began this blog, I believed it to be an outlet for my personal attempts at writing interesting stories about ranchlife. For the first time in history, more of the population of the world lives in cities than in the country.  Most people are removed from the land and the “real world”.  Nature has…

The Spring Creek Raid

Posted on April 3, 2009March 16, 2015

The two brothers dreaded the walk they knew they must take.  Leaving the relative warmth of the log cabin, they trudged outside into four inches of wet spring snow.  The softness and beauty the snow would normally lend to the land now lay eerily upon shapes unknown.  They stepped across Spring Creek’s small meandering flow…

Not Puppies

Posted on April 2, 2009December 17, 2014

They’ve arrived! Nope, not puppies… that was last week. This week’s celebrated arrival is my brand spanking new spiced up hickory kitchen cabinets! If you’ve been here long enough, you know we’ve been working on a kitchen remodel.  There are tons of photos about it… demolition, new sheetrock, and lots and lots of mud. That all was…

The Zone

Posted on March 31, 2009December 14, 2014

For the women out there… (sorry, guys… estrogen area ahead!) Do you remember “The Zone”? For those of you my age… we endured childbirth the “natural” way… no drugs, nada, nothing.  My oldest, my daughter, took forever!  My middle child was a large baby boy with a round head.  My baby… I “zoned” on him……

Blizzard

Posted on March 30, 2009June 26, 2012

This last blizzard stopped me from going to Casper and seeing my sister and brother-in-law.  They are up from Texas… just in time to enjoy a few inches of snow and howling winds.  Believe me, the winds can howl in Casper! Winds have been stronger than usual here… and there’s snow back on the countryside….

Heifer Vaccination

Posted on March 29, 2009December 14, 2014

While the boys were here for spring break… we managed to do those jobs that need everyone on board.  We’ll AI (artificially inseminate) our young yearling heifers in May but the process begins now… vaccinating them with PregGuard. Since Daniel and I work the front of the chute… and Brandon works loading the alley and…

Even though…

Posted on March 28, 2009December 14, 2014

Even though you’d think the entire ranch has come to a standstill to watch and ooooh and aaaah over Elsa’s litter of puppies… of course, that isn’t true. Thanks to Vernon and Johnny’s hard work, the cattle are still being fed… the calves are still being born… and tagged… and reunited with their mommas if the…

Big Sister

Posted on March 27, 2009December 14, 2014

Dally is confused.  She woke me up the other night at 2 am with a “barking fit”.  Turns out she was telling me Elsa had gone into labor… but I ignored her… at 2 am, I try to ignore many things! Her best friend has suddenly turned into a “bitch”. Any attention she asks of…

Two Days Old

Posted on March 26, 2009December 14, 2014

They already look fat… how can that be? I try not to bother them too much… I check on them when I feed Elsa 3 times a day… which by the way, she and my other dogs have flat out rejected the Exclusive Chicken and Rice dog food I bought last week.  I used to…
