Though the first flowers of the season seem to be phlox…it is a plain white flower which lays close to the ground… and though welcome, never seems to inspire. Yellow bells lead the way for celebration. Their mustard color and sweet shape ring in spring. The first to see yellow bells, blue bells, or a bluebird gets to declare the arrival of warmth and green hues.
The local favorite by far seems to be shooting stars. These gorgeous pink wildflowers catch the eye on their delicate stems. Here they are mixed with emerging lupine greenery, giving a false sense of bushiness. I’d love to have a lawn full of shooting stars… but it doesn’t work that way…
