Cathartic?

Posted on July 17, 2009December 31, 2014
Cathartic… purging the bowels… metaphorically cleansing the psyche.
Ewwww!
Right?
Never did I know until today… that turkey vultures’ Latin name is Cathartes aura.
Purifier.
As in regurgitation.
As in urohydrosis.
Look that one up!
Why do I care?
Because up at the Mills place you see this…

See ’em?
They love it up there…
They have for years…

They roost in the cottonwoods…
and around the corral…
I counted close to thirty.
Yes.
Thirty.
They are kinda creepy…
I don’t want to believe in portents when they are about…
Flying overhead…
Stretching their wings…
Gliding on thermals with their six foot wingspans…
Dipping and tilting…
Often mistaken for an eagle in flight by tourists…
They are, in their own way… cool.
And still creepy.

Carol, Wyoming rancher

Since 2008, I’ve kept this photographic journal of life on our working Wyoming ranch.  I share ranch work, my family, crafts and DIY, my English Shepherds, Bravo and Indy, and a love for this land.  Enjoy this red dirt country!
