Chasing the Moon

Posted on December 21, 2010March 29, 2015

I’m the one in the family that makes note of astronomical events.

There’s the Perseids and the Leonids.
Comets are simply awesome.
The International Space Station’s orbit is on a tracker and I can haul you outside and we’ll watch it for its 2 minutes of glory as it goes by.
Satellites are numerous in my nights.
Constellations are second nature in the summertime.
When I win the lottery, a large Dobsonian would be on my splurge list.
Favorite movies include October Sky and Apollo 13.
Favorite television has to include a certain starship captain…
So, no surprise, the lunar eclipse was on my list of “Things to Stay Up Late For”.
But after a full day’s work, and then a trip to Worland for groceries, and unloading said groceries, and writing a certain blog… I was tired.
I’d run outside and glance up.  Shiver in the cold.  Shake my head and run back inside.  I did a load of laundry.  I got into my jammies.  I procrastinated as long as I could, but I failed.
To wake up at 6… I REALLY need to go to bed by midnight.
So this was it.

With its shimmering halo in place, and no shadow eating at its soul, the moon had to bid me goodnight.
On the way to work this morning, though…
Who played peekaboo with me?

I even chased the moon a ways further out of town, but this time I was too late.

Too early for the eclipse, too late to catch it over the mesa… I’m chasing the moon, and catching only its dust!
