Seeing the tom’s dogged pursuit of hens’ attention is one of the spring phenomena that I look forward to every year, like the flyover of the Sandhill cranes heading north. Here there are usually a couple of toms vying for the hens’ attention, who can be mighty blase. But the males persevere in the face of indifference and outright discouragement when the hens actively walk away. It’s a great lesson in tenacity.
