At branding, I’m running the bar part of our A bar A brand. That means I visit every calf to apply the brand. That doesn’t leave much time for photography! I have a bit of time since Vernon or Johnny go first to apply the two A’s… and if I let the vaccinators in first as well, I have a few spare moments more.
I see great branding photos on places like Instagram… but realize they probably aren’t *working*, and probably not yanking a point and shoot out of their breast pockets, turning it on, and snapping a few shots before going back to work. I tried to take some different views, but it’s hard to plan a shot, get in position, and have the horses and ropers and wrestlers not be in the way!
I did decide that this time I wanted some closeups… I’m always trying to tell a story or explain why/how we brand… and I look for general shots to show the controlled chaos! I was happy I finally managed to get some “portraits” instead.

P.S. And everyone taking part–from Great Grandpa Greet, to the wives and the little guy–who in ten years will be in there doing his part too. Love seeing it!
These are great photos, Carol, and really do tell us the story of the very hard work that is being done by all hands on deck. Work that takes so much skill, experience and true “grit.” I can almost hear those calves mooing, the dust flying, and everyone doing their part in getting it done. Thank you for doing this for us to see!
These are So Good!!
Carol, those were great pictures ,especially of the little boy and his Mom. Some of the most precious pictures I have is of harvest or work outside the house or the barn work. My Mom was great to take pictures and I take a lot also. Thank you for taking the time to share your family. Sharon Drake. south central Kansas. Wheat harvest is in full force.
so many people do not realize what it takes to put that yummy burger or steak on their plate- should walk a mile in your boots- Great job!!
Wonderful!
Lovely pictures. A nice touch stone for memories from my childhood.
Great photos Carol. You have all worked so hard. Hope you get some ‘me’ time for crafting this week.
