#TBT: Old Cellar

Posted on July 20, 2018

This photo is from my mother-in-law’s side of the family.  It may be a little different, but I thought you’d agree that this above ground root cellar is pretty creative!  Instead of digging down or into the side of the hill, the root cellar building was “built up with rocks and each layer filled with dirt never freezes”.

Photos from 1921 and 1922.  Ten Sleep.

My Grandparents lived in that house. They bought it from Mr. Alexander in the early 1940’s. Mr. and Mrs. Carl Snyder They were the last ones to live there.

My Great Grandparents built one like that and then dirt on one side. We lived on the farm and the cellar was always cool and dry. Thank you for showing the pictures. Sharon Drake. south central Kansas

I wish we had the rock here to build one of those. I’d start now. I’ve thought of doing something like that, and your picture just confirms it is workable.

Wow, I’d love to have a root cellar like that! Too bad we have strayed so far from the days when every home had a garden and a root cellar.

Never say anything like that! If your town (or another town close by) has a Historical Museum, I bet some of your pictures would be worth displaying.

A good idea and a lot of hard work. Should have eliminated any problems with water or dampness and it would be easier to get things into or out of, probably also cleaner.
