No more news on the chicken/egg front. Nothing else has hatched, but I’m still going to give her a couple of more days just to make sure… I can’t believe only one out of ten would be fertile, but who knows. I’ll attempt to break her from being broody if these don’t work out. Poor little hen…
I tagged along with Vernon as he had asked some neighbor boys to come help lift the wall on his newest project. The past few years, the winter project has been our bale feeders. This year’s is a new salt shed for the mountain.
We spend lots of time running up the mountain spreading salt and minerals to our cows. We check fence, we look over the herd health and water and grass… but then we have to run back down the mountain to irrigate and hay! You’re either beating up your expensive pickup on bad roads (not to mention those pricey tires), or overloading your four wheeler or side by side with multiple 50 pound sacks of salt! That may cause a few problems with bearings and such…
Our plan is to have a salt shed on the mountain where we can store salt and mineral. That will let us zip up there in our side by side, load the salt, spread it around the pastures, and save some wear and tear.
It is rather taller than I thought it would be… but it’s 7’ high in the back so you have plenty of head clearance by the back wall. The roof has to be steep to shed all the winter snow.
I think it’s looking good!
Find me here!
So how do you get that big shed up the mountain? (I know, I know, very carefully). But really, how does that happen?
We will drag it onto a flatbed trailer… tractors are great for all sorts of things!
The shed is looking great – and should be really handy!!
Mom always said that they needed moisture to hatch well, as in, that is why many large birds nest on the ground, for that little bit of moisture. She would occasionally sprinkle her eggs when the hen nested in some dry area, like a barn or shed. I haven’t set a hen but once, and I did sprinkle her eggs as she was in the barn and she hatched out about half of her clutch. Hope that you still get more!
Good neighbors are a blessing. Holding out hope that you’ll still get more little peepers hatching!
time for a new rooster? The salt shed is gonna be a great addition, I’m seeing a table & couple benches for lunch on the mt. & can’t wait to see your contribution to the outside of the walls!
Looks like a great job. So glad you and Vernon are all better.
