I’m taking a short break from talking about calving… to answer a question many of you had after my last “Ten Things You May Not Know About…” post. Of course, it was on chicks and eggs… and many of you became fascinated with chicken ears, of all things!
Luckily, Victoria FINALLY made it over the mountain for a visit, and I put her in charge of video. I had tried before, but holding a chicken and trying to video and point to a chicken ear all at once was beyond my capabilities as a human with only two hands!
I did find out some more about chickens myself investigating this further.
Did you know they are studying chicken hearing because chickens can regenerate their hearing after it is lost? Studies show they can grow new hair cells after the hair cells have been destroyed. Good news for those people with hearing loss if this leads to future research and cures.
Baby chicks in the shell develop hearing by the twelfth day.
Cool, huh? Enjoy our little video!

If I ever knew this, I forgot, so I found it very fascinating too, and I’ve been around chickens all my life.
Enjoyed this very much. Now I know a lot more about chickens!
Enjoyed the hen talk! Learned something, too. Always thought the lobe was the ear, didn’t know how it could work. Thanks.
Interesting. Thanks for sharing.
Wow that is so interesting. BTW I like your Stormy Kroner hat. I have one but now I want to get the Rancher model. I am going right to the factory to get one. Your thank you package will be in the mail by Monday. Thanks again.
Thanks for taking me back to my youth! our hen house wasn’t neat as neat as yours, we just had white hens, & the bucket nests, good idea, & just hearing the hens “talking”! Well Done!
