Swallowing Stones

Posted on August 27, 2019August 27, 2019

We took the time to stop and look into some history. While Vernon had known there was a tiny community in this area once, we didn’t know where certain foundations remained.

A relative shared with us where the school house foundation was and, unbelievably, we walked right to it! Great directions, L.! Thanks!

You can make it out… kind of! Vernon has just left the back wall, and I’m standing on the line of rocks used for foundation. It’s easy enough to walk past this area and never notice the faint foundation… but once you start looking, barbed wire, tin cans, nails, and even a broken spoon was in the area. Of course, we didn’t spend much time looking… and I could feel myself itching to come back with my metal detector so I *really* could find more barbed wire!

I may see if I can find a photo of this place in its heyday… but that might be a tough one!

The earth is swallowing stones… and soon the evidence will disappear.

Very interesting! What was the name of the community? Wouldn’t you love to know more of the history of the tiny community, its inhabitants, and the lives spent there. I hope you find some treasures with your metal detector.

interesting, there was a spot in my back yard where the grass just wouldn’t grow, I finally dug it up & I found what I think was where the “out house” was back when my house was built, they buried lots of junk, broken dishes, bent silverware, ect when they filled the hole when they got indoor plumbing, now I have grass growing! I know about out houses, our country school had 2, Helen N. & I were the last to graduate from 8 th. grade before the school closed- every Halloween, the out houses got tipped over! and no, I never helped-

I LOVE this kind of stuff…..hints of years gone by, history slowly being swallowed by the earth. So glad you stumbled on this and shared!
