We’re Ready

Posted on February 18, 2020February 18, 2020

It’s almost time… well, actually, Daniel has been calving his little herd already, but we tried to push back our heifers’ due dates a bit. Anyway, we’re almost ready to start calving!

Last year it was so cold that week we calved the majority of our heifers, we had lots of frozen ears on our calves. Was it three, maybe four? years ago, it was so warm and dry we didn’t even put them in the pen at night! We can’t predict the weather… especially nine months in advance.

The next couple of weeks look like cold but sunny. Highs are supposed to be in the 30’s. That will work.

We do have a large amount of snow… so the guys have been pushing much of it out of the way. Think of clearing parking lots!

There will be beds of straw… easy places to feed them hay… and bare places where baby calves can walk easily. Today the guys moved the heifers and cows to their appropriate locations… we’re ready.

Look forward to hearing and seeing your calving season. More rain and floods here. No snow.

Nice playground for little calves. Fingers crossed for the perfect calving weather, may it all be easy for the mommas and babies.

Looks good! Hope all goes well, no frozen ears, that seems to follow the calf all the way thru at sale time- will be looking forward to “baby” pictures!
