Ugly

Posted on March 8, 2020March 8, 2020

An amazing amount of snow has melted with warmer temperatures and warmer breezes. While flat fields still hold their snow, anything tipped slightly with a southern exposure has become either mush, slush, water, or mud!

It makes it interesting when we feed, the ruts in the road are deepening…

I drove the tractor again for Brandon today, leading the heifers and their calves to fresher ground. Looking at the road over the hill, I wasn’t very nervous, it was a gentle grade and it looked level itself. As I drove, the tractor began to want to slide downhill. I kept going. I had to turn the wheels uphill hoping to hit some purchase as the back kept shoving us uphill and gravity and greasy red dirt kept luring us downhill!

It was never a heart stopping moment… but it was a tad unnerving!

No. I did not stop to take a photo!

The road down to the bulls was much worse, having two days of snowmelt in the ruts, digging them deeper and deeper. I opened the gate and waved Brandon through. I’d rather walk down the hill than have him stop and drive me down!

I didn’t take photos of him driving down… or back up! Yes, I walked back UP the hill as well. His ruts are impressive, too bad there’s nothing there to give perspective!

Take my word for it. It’s ugly.

Since I’ve had quite a few questions lately in my comments, I think I’ll throw together a quick Q&A. Anyone else? Post your question now, and I’ll be working on it over the next few days.

Some of the roads and sidewalks here that were flooded ended up with a layer of mud. Thankful to those who hosed them down, but like you our fields are a soggy, muddy mess!!!!! A question. When baby calves are tagged (that nice earring you give them) is the number unique or does it reference their Mamma? Does the colour tag have any significance? Thank you.

I do know that feeling. Your almost to busy trying not to get into trouble to be scared. Glad it turned out good.

our farm was on a gravel road, school, church, all gravel roads, 5 miles to town on Sat. morning trips with mom grocery shopping, I know all about muddy roads, & when there is a thaw & then re freeze, those ruts are really tough to drive on! oh, the good old days-
