Oh, spring fever has me in its grip! Unfortunately, next week is supposed to be cold and snowy…
I couldn’t help it, I had Brandon help me get my cold frame out of the garage. I’m probably a month early on this, but hey, you might as well see what happens! I’ve set it out to gather some heat from the sun, and thaw the dirt in a few flower pots.
If you’re not familiar with cold frames, northern gardeners use them to start plants early or harden up seedlings before transplanting. I remember my dad made them years ago. I provided the windows and my sister built one for each of us.
The window lid raises up or the window can open for ventilation. I have some rigid foam I could add for insulation. I also placed some brick inside to absorb the heat during the day to release it at night. I’ll probably add some jugs of water for the same purpose. Next week, I may cover it at night with a heavy blanket.
All I’ve done is to plant a few lettuce seeds, just to see if I can get them going this early. It’s an easy experiment with little cost. This time of year makes me want to see growing things, maybe this will do it!
I get to celebrate anyway, my driveway is all dried up! No muddy shoes or muck boots! That’s sooooo nice! Plus I heard my first sandhill crane of the year! Yahoo!

Hey, those are some great gardening tips! I’m starting to think and plan my veggie garden too.
I do a small one, but adequate for one person…2 tomato plants, early peas, wax beans and cukes….also potatoes pots. The bulbs are starting to poke up! Always a lovely season to enjoy.
Question: Do you have a stable for the horses in the winter, or are they outdoors? And do chickens venture outside during the cold season? (I’m always learning new things, and hope these are not stupid questions from a suburbanite!)
