The Old Shell Store

Posted on August 25, 2020August 25, 2020

I know some of you are not Instagram people… but I’m a fan. I follow artists and locals and craftspeople and cowboys and metal detectorists and amazing women and NASA and National Geographic. They post amazing photos and short sentences… sometimes short videos… and I pretty much enjoy it all.

If you’re “local-ish”, and follow me, chances are, I’ll follow you back. There’s not many Wyoming people in the first place and fewer still on Instagram.

That’s how I found The Old Shell Store. Shell, Wyoming sits at the base of the Big Horn Mountains, just like Ten Sleep. We have Ten Sleep Creek going down Ten Sleep Canyon. They have Shell Creek going down Shell Canyon. We have Highway 16 (aka The Sweet 16) going over the Big Horns, they have Highway 14. When we took off driving for our quick anniversary half day off trip… I suggested we check out The Old Shell Store.

Remodeling a stone store built in 1897, I’m sure had many challenges. Doing it in the spring of 2020 must have been crazy. Nevertheless, it looks AMAZING.

The front is a store… t-shirts, basic supplies, local items. In the middle is the main counter… order your meal here, or come for the sweets. That’s what got me here… their photos of their baked goods looked heavenly. Since it *was* our anniversary, we each got *two* desserts. Vernon bought a muffin and a sugar cookie that was stacked soooooo high with frosting! I chose the “Brookie”, which in local terms usually means a nice little Brook Trout, but in this case, it is a half brownie/half chocolate chip cookie. Then I had this amazing creation of two chocolate chip cookies with sea salt and caramel buttercream sandwiched in between.

Yes, it was too much to eat in one sitting. Yes, they were both amazingly delicious. Yes, I’m gonna go back…

I’m not sure what it looked like before, but I was impressed with the remodel/update. It had the character and charm I was looking for and the freshness of a new building as well. I wish them the best of luck!

If you get a chance, follow them on Instagram… I guarantee you’ll be craving some goodies when you see the photos!

(No, they don’t know who I am. No, I’m not being compensated for this review.)

Loved the pictures of the store, but no pictures of your desserts? And don’t tell me to look on Instagram, although I must start looking.

I must confess I first thought of Shell gasoline!

Wow! I was in the old store and this is quite the transformation. Have a picture of it on my desk with Grandma Lizzie Saban and Uncle John standing in front. Lizzie’s husband, Percy, was the postmaster there.
