I debated about sharing this…
It’s gross. It made me say some bad words.
So, if you’re not interested in unsavory medical anomalies, maybe you should just skip this post and I’ll see you tomorrow.
Here’s your chance.
See ya later…
OK.
Three and a half months ago, Daniel tipped over his four wheeler. Thank goodness he wasn’t hurt seriously… I mean, he *was* hurt… He landed on a tree stump that poked into his arm pit. He was VERY SORE but didn’t need anything but time to heal. Or that’s what we thought.
Once his muscles were back to normal, he continued to have off and on swelling with some oozing in his arm pit. It wasn’t red. It wasn’t hot.
Hold on. That’s not the gross part!
I guess part of being a rancher is dealing with some gross, bloody, pus filled, swollen, disgusting things… and I have a curiosity on how and why and what *is* that? Veterinary work is interesting… Sometimes, though, it’s your kid…
Anyway, Daniel came to me, saying he could feel a bump in his armpit that hadn’t been there before. Tess said it was round, kind of like the head on a chicken pox. Hmmm. Daniel and I traipsed into the bathroom where the good light was and I proceeded to investigate!
Sure enough, in a fold of skin in his armpit, I could see something. It was a quarter of an inch across, yellow, smooth, and very hard. I switched from finger to q-tip to tweezers.
“Should I pull it out?”
I really had no idea what it was… a dried out lymph node? curdled fat?
Daniel just requested I not tell him when ever I decided to pull on it… so I leaned forward, got a good look, grabbed it hard with the tweezers and yanked. It kept coming. And coming.
I had to change the angle of my pull and I finally got it all out and flung it into the sink.
We both looked at the sink.
A stick.
A broken part of a stick.
For three and a half months, Daniel’s body had been trying to get rid of this!!!
Is this gross or what?
There was almost no bleeding, no smelly pus, but I was very grossed out. We were both in shock, not believing what we were seeing. If I’d been smart, I would have sat Daniel down before I yanked on this thing, but I did it without planning. I was also glad I kept pulling instead of stopping partway. He would have dropped his arm down and pushed the stick back in and that, I believe, would have hurt a great deal.
Today he told me how good he felt… not only can he raise his arm with no pain, but his overall feeling is great. He didn’t realize how this had drug him down for three and a half months.
I should say so… having such a large foreign object in your body has to be draining.
We’re so blessed this came out on its own… even if it was gross!
Find me here!
So pleased you got that out Nurse Mama. Daniel must be so glad to feel so much better.
hehehehee… that made me grin.. Ask Ali some time, she will confirm that I too don’t shrink from using tweezers or even sometimes a scalpel.. Good job you.. and kudos to Daniel for ignoring that small tree for 3.5 months.. Only negative is you didn’t video the op 🙂
I so regret not video-ing the incident!
Your decision to “operate” was the correct decision. It would have been about $500.00 or more in the emergency room! Amazing how “ranch” people figure out what to do, after dealing with animals. Perhaps an antibiotic would be in order, but maybe you did that also!
OMG!!! That was not what expected with the gross warning. (I thought it was going to be a cyst and really gross,) I was impressed that there was no blood, smelly pus or the like. Glad he’s feeling better. Ranchers are tough!
OUCH! That is beyond a splinter, more like a small piece of a tree! So glad he is feeling better already.
Thank God you figured it out. So glad that is all that happened, even if it hurt for a while. I’m sure I would have jumped when you started pulling.
Good for you Momma! A giant splinter!Glad Daniel is ok!
