Little Things

The weather has been holding extremely well as of late. Sure, we’ve had a few snowstorms, even waking up to a big skiff of snow on Thanksgiving morning… but the snow has melted away (except in the darkest shadows) and the high temperatures have pleasantly been in the 30’s and 40’s. While that may sound cold, if the sun is shining, it’s surprisingly pleasant.

Surprisingly pleasant weather lets the guys keep working. While one pipeline has been giving them a bit of trouble… for the most part, they aren’t running from one “fire” to another. With not haying, irrigating, moving cattle, or farming, the guys are actually working on things they *want* to do, not things they *have* to do.

Vernon did this the other day.

I know. I looked for a photo of a “before” shot, so you could see the difference. Just envision this: Greasewood. It’s a bush about four feet tall, with spines that grab at your clothes and your horse. You have to ride around it and it really is just like maze of painful branches. This spot is notorious for losing baby calves. As we trail them out the gate, it’s here that the calves decide they can break away, run back downhill and back to where they *think* their momma is. For years, we’ve tolerated this aggravating area.

But look at it now! It’s clean and clear up to the gate! If a calf tries to break back, we can be there in a second, instead of circling around some greasewood to hopefully catch them in time.

It may not look like much, but this will save us some headache. Don’t worry, there’s greasewood out of the frame, in case you were wondering.

Then, they’ve also been doing this:

There used to be a big mud puddle/rutted spot here… and several other places along the road. They are all now filled with wonderful gravel. Sure, there’s some bigger rocks we will have to pick up, but wonder of wonders, we won’t be squishing through those places for a while.

It’s the little things in life that make you squeeee with delight!
