Warmth

Posted on January 29, 2021January 29, 2021

Vernon has been working on our calving shed. With the expansion of our new added sheds (which aren’t yet in their new positions), the calving shed area needed new lighting. We’re also trying something else new, infrared heat.

Our calving shed has two indoor pens, and the others are in an open faced three sided shed. It faces the south, and when the sun is shining… the heat can be wonderful. If it’s nighttime, or cloudy, and very cold, it’s better than no protection, but still…

Heating this area has never been very practical. Regular heaters are just heating the entire out of doors… Covering the front would have blocked the sun, creating a dark shadowy area that heifers would not appreciate. But with infrared heaters, the heat can be directed to the heifer and her calf as they stand in the pen. The lights tilt, so there is some ability to aim the heat. The small rectangle on the left is a light.

I’m interested in trying them out… and, hopefully, they’ll add some great warmth!

An ideal plan for your new ‘maternity ward’.

It’ll be interesting to see how it works. Warm mamas and babies — great!
