Red Dirt In My Solar Array

Yeah, I said it. I stole it from a friend who was helping us with this back in June. I have mentioned we were working on a cool project… and finally, I’m done with the video! One day, as I stood scraping some wind blown dust out of the racks the solar panels sit on, my friend said this… and I laughed and told him I was going to steal that phrase! So here we are.

The Mesa Pasture is familiar to you… and one of the very first videos I made back in 2010 was about the 70 year old ram pump we used to bring water out of Otter Creek Canyon. We had switched to a propane generator for the past years. Now we had the opportunity for a collaborative work with Sun Drive Tech. A small solar array would power the pump, filling water tanks and water storage units across the pasture.

It works!

It varies throughout the day, pumping 1-7 gallons per minute depending on the position of the sun and the weather.

    Did you do the aerial shots? How? A drone? What a great use of clean solar. At first I thought the cows could fight over who got to stand in the shade, Good move to fence it off so that couldn’t happen. Love it. I’m a great fan of solar. It’s on my house.

    WOW. An amazing use of solar panels. The arial views stunning. Two questions: does it face south and will it be ok in your WY winters.

    Loved the video do you turn off the pumps in winter? If so is it hard to start the flow in spring.

    WOW. Who would of thought of using soral power to pump water for cattle. Wonderful idea. What kind of maintenance will the solar panels need?
