Call me crazy. A month ago I decided to spend some money… The way prices are rising, I thought if I spent the money now, I might save myself some cash come spring, the normal time I would have spent it. So… I placed my order, and they arrived Wednesday.
Yes, I’ve ordered baby chicks.
Don’t ask me what kind, because they’re a ”rainbow mix” of egg layers. I’d waited for too long to get the breeds I wanted. In fact, I was lucky to get these little girls. I never really thought about hatcheries not raising chicks in the winter, though it makes sense and I just barely squeezed under the wire with this order.
Since I use a light in my coop to keep my older chickens warm in the winter, I figured why not have some chicks under the heat light as well? November can be a warmish month. Well. Not this year. It is currently 1*.
So I have chicks in a plastic tub inside a wire dog crate in my mudroom. The coop is way too cold for babies even with the light. But come spring, they should start laying and I may be a step ahead of those who order chicks in the spring like sane people do. If prices continue to rise, I may be very satisfied with my purchase!
I just researched the Polish breed, of which I have some, easy to tell because of their “top knot”. They aren’t supposedly good free ranging chickens because they can’t see well with feathers in their face! Great. I’ll be giving chickens haircuts in the spring so they can eat.
Yup. I am crazy.

A great adventure for the winter months. Keep those little ones warm.
Yes, we will need pictures as they grow!
