Daniel’s little herd has calved, and two days ago, the one cow that Vernon and I own privately calved as well. Yay!
Isn’t she cute?
Yes, she has shelter and dry ground to lay on, but I guess the snow wasn’t that bad with the 40* temperature.
Our heifers are due to start calving on the 27th, tomorrow… and we’re all shocked that not one has come early. We’d be thrilled if they got busy since the weather is agreeable.
The weather is due to change, but so long as it doesn’t get cruelly cold, snow will not be all that bad. Now, Mother Nature, please don’t take that as a challenge.
We will see if anything happens tomorrow… and the next ten days…
Find me here!
I love the last picture! Hope all the calving goes smoothly.
Irmgard is on the right page for these days and I’m also intrigued by the privately owned cow. I assume the mom’s milk is used for whatever (cheese, cream, milk and whatever) but what about the little cutie. Might she be sold for a little extra income? And if you own the cow privately, who owns the rest of the herd? You and the bank or who? Am I getting too nosey? Sorry, but with the blog, I feel like you are my friend, so I can ask and you can not answer if you choose.
I’ll be doing a Q&A and answer your questions.
Hopefully you will have good weather for your new arrivals.
Congratulations! (-: My fingers are crossed for agreeable weather for a good while, for the babies, heifers/cows – and the ranchers, too. Will you be keeping the little cutie for some time or will she be entrusted to your freezer? (Or is that an offensive question? Then sorry, please ignore! I sometimes find it difficult to safely navigate conversation, esp. in a different culture and esp. nowadays.)
I’ll answer your questions soon.
