After two days at the library, it’s back at it for me. We have a winter storm warning with a chance for 10” of snow, so we decided to bring what hadn’t calved yet, called the “heavies”, into a large lot. We’ll feed them there, give them some bedding, and keep a close eye on them while the storm moves through.
There still were some that needed tagged and the new ones recorded. Lorelei had been my buddy for quite a bit of the time, but she decided to go with her dad for a while.
As I took this pic of Daniel and Brandon tagging, I noticed Lorelei in the background. She’s staying safe, out of the way in case the cow becomes cranky, but on closer inspection, that girlie is chill.
Jekyll willingly is her backrest. The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle hat adds some extra eyeballs to watch the action. And before the storm rolls in, the sun is packing some heat. What a life!
Not all cows are perfectly willing to let you harass their calves… I guess I missed the big show where the guys had to deal with one cow intent on bodily harm! She wasn’t successful, thank goodness, and they were laughing about it retelling the story.
I did help out with one where we barred the cow from her calf and threw him up on a four wheeler. You’re much less vulnerable there than on the ground.
It’s always an adventure!
