With the storm that blew in last night, I knew I’d better just wait for Vernon to bring me the calf or calves. Sure enough…

This big, 100 or 110 pound boy was not extremely cold, even if one ear was partially frozen. But he was still wet, so into my calf cooking bag he went. I set the blow drier to *simmer* and began cutting out a calf blanket.

I have a cute helper…

This pattern gives plenty of extra blanket in the neck and belly even on this big calf. I can’t decide if that’s good or bad. If they were up and walking, it wouldn’t work well, but if I’m trying to revive a really cold calf, having the extra to wrap them in may be the way to go. The next one I make will be smaller for sure.
The head goes through the slit, and the legs are pulled through the holes. On a sickly calf, that will be easy enough to do.

You can see how all that fabric could be wasted. But, it helped revive him… and Brandon had a struggle lifting him up when he took him back to his mom. The reunion went well and on the way, Lorelei named him Glen. I’ll try to keep you updated.

You have a busy home maternity unit. Lucky calf to have a nice warm blanket.
Isn’t it colder this year than usual? And maybe snowier as well? What’s the fabric? It looks like it might be a blanket.
Brandon must be really strong. He certainly looks determined. Fingers crossed for his back!
Oh my, Glen is a VERY large calf! I think it is ingenious to make a calf warming blanket. Good luck.
Lordy, I can’t believe how clean your mudroom floor looks with all that is going on there in calving season! Prayers for Glen and also Brandon’s back! 🙂
Oh my gosh! Glen is a BIG boy!!
Is this a busier year than usual for your “ in home” care?
I don’t remember all these special warm ups in years past….
You sure are busy
