It was hot! 71 degrees today, if you can believe that. It felt like the 90’s because of the radical change that we haven’t had a chance to acclimate. Of course, we had to move cows today…
Our “CATTLE ON ROAD” sign went out and we began to urge the mommas and babies onto the highway. I’ve spoken many times of the lack of ease when baby calves are included, and this day was no different. Almost immediately we lost some in a run back looking for their mother/child. Brandon and Vernon went with them, Daniel, Quinlan, and I kept pushing on the main herd so we wouldn’t lose them all. It was a challenge, but we heaved them over a hilltop and down along Crooked Creek. They’re less likely to run uphill, especially on such a hot day, so Daniel went back to help Vernon and Brandon. Quinlan and I simply held the line until the bad characters were returned to the herd.
Yes, this was a wheeled day… Three miles down the highway could have been so easy…
We all spent time bailing out of our vehicles to turn calves back the right way, though Brandon definitely got his steps in for the day! We were grateful for all the dogs, too!
Hot, sweaty, dusty, thirsty, and sore, we finally had lunch about 5 pm. It wasn’t pretty, but they’re in the right spot for a few days until we move them one last time before branding.

Amazing how the snow is melted considering the amount you had.
Love the pictures as always! Reminds me of a Willy song “ on the road again”
Weather, temperature, and cows never fully cooperate! Why would any of them want to make it easy? Great story as usual. The thought of those mothers and others babies losing each other made me smile. Shanks for that.
Your recent fluctuations in the weather certainly have presented one challenge after another. Sometimes I wonder what the animals think about it! hahaha Another good story today,
