After a great morning visiting with Brandon and his crew for Mother’s Day (and Megan helping me to order more Red Dirt In My Soul books!) … and then Daniel’s crew… and then lunch, Vernon and I were discussing what to do. All of the recent rain had put an ending to our weekly trips to see how far up the mountain we could make it. Then Daniel called. Cows were behind his house. Cows aren’t supposed to be behind his house.
Vernon said we’d take a quick drive out to the pasture to see what was going on. We loaded into the sxs and off we went.
Well, there’s one of our calves bedded down close to an open gate.
Ok. You stay there and we will find your mother. We found the mother and about 30-40 other ones! They had rubbed down not one, but two, gates and decided the other pasture looked better than the one they were supposed to be in. Yippeekiyiyay.
But one did turn out to be the lost little calf’s, so we turned the cow down the fence line and started to follow.
Way off in the distance is Little Lost Calf.
Turn around, Little Lost Calf, and head for that open gate you were at earlier.
Good calf… and mom…
Yay. Time for a late lunch for Little Lost Calf.
Vernon added some new staples to the gate wires and everyone was happy. Our “run out and check” turned into a few hours work, but although it was cloudy, it was a beautiful day in the neighborhood for a Mother’s Day excursion.
Find me here!
Well done on sorting those wandering cows. Nice sky photos.
Always work even on Mothers Day! Love the story!
Great story. I like happy endings. And that beautiful Wyoming sky that didn’t make anyone wet!! Great.
“Search and rescue” with a happy ending for everyone…made a great story for Mothers Day.
