On our jaunt up the mountain over to Bayer Creek, I was pretty sure I hadn’t shown you the new style of fence we had built. If I have, sorry to repeat myself!
Vernon spends many an hour building and repairing fence. You need to have cattle that respect fence (so they don’t go wandering EVERYWHERE) and tight wires and solid posts are a must. I like going along, swinging a hammer at loose fence staples (the u shaped nails that hold the barbed wire to the wooden post). I have a much more relaxed version of fencing than Vernon, I enjoy scenery and flowers and wildlife and arrowheads!
But in his quest to find fence tighteners or gate latches or new stays, Vernon stumbled across this. Here’s a pic from last year…
Scraggly gate post and brace, old repaired wire, trust me… it didn’t look very good and wasn’t particularly good at its job.
This is the same fence line, all the way up the hill! It’s so nice even with the heavy snow over winter (snow is very very very hard on fences) and with the presence of many elk. These are metal posts and braces with the neatest little invention. Along the metal post is welded an angled piece with notches. You can put the wire in whatever notch you’d like, depending on the angle of the ground and your desired width.
From the top, a small rod runs down the inside of the angle, restraining the wire in its place. Now isn’t that the coolest idea ever? Plus metal posts will last a good long while! They’re pounded in with a skid steer, great for our rocky country. Yes, it means fewer staples for me to hammer, but it’s a 1000% better.
(I know, the videos didn’t get made… sorry!)
Find me here!
Cool invention that looks like it will last, especially over the winter.
Wondering how many feet are in between them?
Skid steer??? What is that, please? It sounds like a cow that’s run amok ; )
The new fence is beautiful. Is
Has it really been there over the winter, or is it as new as it looks?
Lots better! I always wish the old ones could talk and tell of times past. Is the new fence more wildlife friendly for elk and antelope?
That is so COOL! One of the things I hated most about building fences was fighting to get those wire holders on, hooked at the right height and tight enough to work.
Wow! Beautiful.
A wonderful idea! We should do it here in Iowa!
interesting invention. I will bet that lasts a long time.
Fence looking good and strong! Beautiful green grass up there makes for Happy Cows!
