Another morning. Another ride.
I could take a zillion photos of these two… I never tire of seeing them ride together. I hope they always do.
Today’s challenge…
Up, down, back, forth, and two loops by the guys, plus random trips by Vernon on his four wheeler… while Jaxon had the job of holding the main herd. It’s a boring job especially for kids as time drags on sooooooo slowly.
He takes his responsibility seriously though, and he was left alone for quite a while. Part of cowboying is knowing where the rest of your crew is… and I’m sure by the whoops and hollers encouraging cattle to come off the steep slopes, the occasional barks from the dogs, and the whinnies of lonely horses, Jaxon knew we weren’t far away.
Down across the creek… and up a few steep slopes… a big scenic drop down…
Down the highway a bit… then into a lot where we paired out everything…
By then it was HOT, about 90°! I was hot, tired, sore, thirsty, and mad at my horse and my dog. Some days, things just aren’t always rosy. While I love doing this, and in between cussing at my dog, I can still be grateful for the beauty and chance to even be there… sometime you just have to go ahead and cuss your dog.
Bravo tends to be a heading dog instead of a heeling dog, and today that meant sending three, THREE!, calves back the wrong way and through fences, which cost us time and work. I apologized for him, and it just mortifies me that it is my dog behaving badly. Dogs have bad days, too. Guess this day wasn’t a winner for either of us. The job did get done, and everything is in the right place in the end… so I’ll count it as an ugly win, but still a win!

Well done on getting through a 90F day.
Thank you for keeping things real here by sharing this story.
Sweet comment on watching your boys ride. Do you ever post pictures when they were young boys?
