While we waited for the storms to clear out so we could once again make hay… other random jobs were completed.
Repairs were made to two different gates and the corral. Since I was late to the party, there is no “before” photo, but trust me, the huge gatepost that used to be here was only propped in place! This is much better!
Even though it’s still tough work, it’s sooooooo much easier to do than in those “good old days”. Take for instance, probably everyone’s least favorite gate.
This large, HEAVY, wooden panel had to be drug off to the side to make way to this field. Brandon dealt with it when irrigating, Daniel could barely fit equipment through the space, and it was just plain heavy for me to move at any time. Time for it to go away!
Used to be that would mean a tractor and some chains to pull it away and maybe a chainsaw to cut it down and shovels to dig a new post hole. Now, the little skid steer handles it all.
The puller makes quick work of dragging off the heavy gate, and pulling the post out of the ground.
Next, the bucket attachment widens the road a bit, getting what’s fallen off the bank over the years. There is rock there, so Vernon couldn’t move very far, but it helped. We also found an ingenious pivot that originally probably worked pretty slick to open that gate, but it had long corroded away.
Next came the post pounder. Half that metal post will be shoved into the ground… no digging holes with a shovel anymore!
The brace on one side is complete and Brandon holds the last post to be pounded in. Later on, they’ll make a barbed wire gate which will be amazing!
What could have taken easily a half a day and lots of sweat in those “good old days”, is now done in about an hour and a half.
Then, since they were on a roll, might as well do a little repair on the corral…
Brandon had welded the cross bars the day before. Add two posts to weld to… and we’ll see how well it holds up next time some bulls get in a fight! The skid steer is the star of the show… and a welcome edition to our equipment list!

That’s quite a versatile, time-saving invention. How about a little video of it in action sometime?
Does he hold it while the post is pounded in? That sounds scary. Can the puller hold the post while it’s being pounded or can’t the skid steer do two things at once?

My grandson would have loved to watch this – though getting him (at 9) to just watch might have been a challenge.
What a great piece of equipment!
