The fog had hung low and so we waited for sunshine. An hour later than anticipated, we began. Daniel and I on the lower end, Vernon, Brandon, Megan, and Quinlan on the upper side. The cows were not very cooperative and we couldn’t blame them. Fall had been glorious. Moisture was abundant. Grass was plentiful. Why leave this little bit of paradise?

We knew the forecast. The steer calves had a date to go to their new home. It was time.

Down and down and around and around. Quinlan was surprised to see the lead strung out half a mile on the county road while the tail end was still high above them. We didn’t take our usual way, so some of the cows were reluctant. It didn’t help that the traffic on those three miles of county road was “busy”. We’d get them hiking along and someone would drive through and they’d remember that wasn’t the direction they wanted to go anyway…

We began at 8 am and rode through til 4:30. When we put them in the field, Quinlan and I declared ourselves DONE. Everyone else had a few more minutes of work as a few cows found a “hole” in the fence that was quickly resolved. We were pooped and ready for lunch!

It was a long day but a beautiful one! Oh, and look! An actual photo of me and my dogs with the cows all strung out! Photo courtesy of Megan.

The distance you can see in your ‘daily office’ is amazing. No wonder you enjoy it so much.
Loooong day with lunch at 4:30??? My goodness. Thanks to Megan and you.
After such perfect weather for this very long day, you MUST be tired…
a “good” tired! Loved every picture, especially the last one with you and the doggies. The long black line of cows strung out, looks like they are
walking along the edge of a deep canyon.
What great country! So vast and beautiful!
And Thanks Megan for taking that pic of Carol. So nice to actually see you out there on your trusty steed with your loyal companions
Gorgeous!
