Stories from James Greet.
”One of the remarkable stories that dad told was about a mute range cow that they had in their herd. She would have a calf every spring. During the spring roundup one year, this cow didn’t seem to have her calf with her. This meant that her calf was left on the range somewhere. Dad wasn’t too badly worried. Bright and early the next morning, dad went to the drift fence and sure enough, this mute cow was there with a “tight bag”. Dad turned her out and followed her. She went as though she knew exactly where to look. She walked up to a little greasewood patch, and there was her calf, laying there in silence, just waiting for its mother to come.
Dad had often said that when a cow and calf were separated, that when night came, each of them would return to where the calf suckled last. I have seen this numerous times.”

Animal communucation is always extremely interesting. Thanks for another vintage piece of writing from a rancher’s life.
Remarkable! Knowledge passed from one generation to the next.
