While Vernon worked on the mountain, I had plans to mow on my yard or check out my garden… but it was HOT. My riding lawnmower is out of commission and the parts haven’t even shipped yet (one week later – c’mon Cub Cadet!). And running my push mower wasn’t appealing. I headed inside, did my dishes, did my laundry… and I decided these boxes of photos from Johnny’s house needed to disappear from my dining room where they’ve been hibernating for a few weeks.
Sooooo many old photos. It’s overwhelming. There are two TRUNKS full and this is just one box! I’ve sorted and looked and gazed at negatives and wondered how in the Sam Hill did anyone ever tell who was who in a 1.5”x1.5” photo where the people were so far away from the camera? It’s a challenge. After watching Johnny Greet ride for over 30 years, I can pick him out of a poor photograph just because of how he sat in his saddle. Some people have unique hairdos. For some people, it’s their smile. Then there’s the background… the barn, the sod roofed bunkhouse, the grey ridge, certain hillsides, the old house.
My apologies to old classmates who graduated in 1947. I don’t know you. You took a great picture, quite classy, most of them… and the few Christmas cards? Thanks. But you are going away. I can only keep so many photos…
I think what I am going to do is buy a bunch of Manila folders. I’m going to separate into decades… right now I’m going through the late ‘40’s and ‘50’s. I’m going to label them (and, yes, Victoria, try to color code them somehow) as 1940’s – Cattle, or 1940’s – Horses, or 1950’s – Holidays. Then come back with different decades of cattle, and horses, and holidays, etc. Yes, there will be overlapping topics, but I will just try my best…
Unless, anyone else have a better idea? I’ll sure listen to it, I have many, many, many more photos to go through!
Find me here!
Colour coding is a great idea. Sorted a lot of my photos a few year’s ago, not colour coded but in envelopes by year/s.
Oh, my goodness! Two trunks full!!!! Looks like a project most of us
have waiting for us, too. (I have tons of slides as well as photos from the past) Little by little is the way to go whether albums or digitized.
What a daunting task, but you can do it if you just do it in small steps. (I should practice what I preach!)
That is a big project! Maybe a good one for winter too when you’re stuck inside. Enjoy looking and the memories that come with them.
