While I’m laid up, I guess some decorative art is on my agenda. First off, I have this buffalo skull hanging on some gorgeous, blue stained tongue and groove.
My apologies for the weird angle. And that’s some sweetgrass I’ve temporarily placed in his nose. The point is, the skull has a tendency to blend in to the tongue and groove. It needs a pop of something!
Vernon suggested I paint the wall an emerald green behind it. Right idea, but, no.
Victoria suggested a small quilt square behind it. I like the idea, and I even have a possible small quilt I could use, but I’m saving this for backup.
I decided in some weird way, that I’d like to put a painting behind it. A painting of wildflowers. Now I’m far from a realism painter, so why am I doing this? Just to see if I can, I guess. If I don’t like it, I’ll go with the colorful quilt idea.
Then, since I don’t have any large canvas, I decided to paint on Masonite and since I didn’t have a big piece of it, but I have many many small pieces, I decided I’d try to do it in four pieces. That way, I don’t have to worry about mounting the skull through the art, I’ll just leave a space between the four panels. It might look weird, but I’m going for it.
If it doesn’t work, all I will be out is some paint and time. But, stick with me, I think it’s gonna be some fun quarter panels!

Carol, I just got back from out in your neighborhood. I drove from Buffalo down through Ten Sleep. I’ve read you telling about driving that road in the dark and the weather. I have to say I have a lot of respect for your driving ability after having driven that route during the day. This isn’t really for the blog, just thought I would let you know. Thanks for all the time you put in to entertain us .
Exciting project for you. Enjoy.
Listen to Bert. He’s on the right track. Do what you like and personally, I think you’re on the right track. Keep us posted.
Carol,
I wouldn’t worry much about whether ot not you are skilled at some category of painting or art.
I believe art is supposed to be your expression or your interpretation of something through YOUR eyes, brain, appendages and the skills, or process, YOU use to express yourself and your feelings about your subject.
Things I notice:
1. You don’t want to distract from the natural beauty of that lodgepole t&g. I have just short of 10,000 board feet of Ponderosa tight knot t&g in my house but that’s only because there wasn’t anybody milling that kind of lodgepole in 1980 when we built the place. I DESPISE sheet rock work so it was an easy choice back then. It’s natural and very appropriate for where you live…
2. The buffalo skull does need to stand out on its own. And all you are doing is putting a frame and setting around it. So do it in a manner that makes YOU happy. The rest of us will or won’t like it but what’s important is that YOU do w/o regard for what the rest of us might think… Personally, I like the idea of the background NOT looking like a perfect still life that Realism might require. New or Old, that Buffalo didn’t live in a post card perfect world, and none of us do.. Paint it as you feel it and can…
3. I like what you’ve shown so far, KEEP GOING….!

This is a really cool, unique idea! Good luck and keep us posted.
