I had vague plans of teaching the young girls a craft over Christmas holiday. It never worked out. No biggee. But I was prepared. They know how to crochet, but often just create long snakes. I had a plan to teach them how to make a hot pad or placemat. I just finally finished a rug!
This all started when a friend gave me some old sheets. I always take them… they’re helpful for wet calves, sick dogs, and painting tarps, among other uses. One of those uses is for rag rugs.
This was made from dollar store cheap sheets… I think I actually paid $1 for each one. You get quite a bit of fabric in one sheet!
Each sheet is ripped into 1.5” strips.
Don’t cut them, just rip away! Then, to keep things nice and neat, roll those strips into balls.
I started with latch hooks but then made my own “needle” out of an old clothespin.
It is simply an overhand knot over a base strand.
Round and round you go, adding strips as you run out or need to change for pattern. It’s fairly easy and maybe someday, I’ll teach the girls that from cheap, worn out, no good sheets something useful and kinda cool can be made.

What fun!! I remember being given one to take to Kindergarten for my
nap!! Wish I knew who made it.
My aunt made one and showed ma how. It had a black border and the cat was afraid of it! She jumped over it rather than cross it.
That’s awesome!!
A great rug. Finding sheets, cheap or otherwise, that are patterned is a challenge here in the UK 🙁
Looks good!
