Rescue Efforts

Posted on March 15, 2025March 15, 2025

A spring snow storm blew in leaving 5” of snow.

I rode along to support Vernon while he checked for baby calves.

Like this one.

He had known this cow was calving and had moved her twice away from the creek. Here she was, back on the creek bank with her brand new baby. All that calf has to do is try to stand and it’ll end up staggering downhill again and again and again until it falls in and drowns. Some calves are simply drawn to the water, unfortunately.

Momma was not too happy to move. Vernon was very cautious, putting a rope around the calf to drag it away from the creek bank.

As the snow melted and Brandon checked back… yeah, she was right back to the edge again… and he moved her one more time. Sometimes you have to be insistent about rescue efforts.
